01-28-07 Transfer a Domain Name
I should attempt to perform the domain transfer now (today). Nominally there is a 60 day window on both sides of the domain renewal date in whih you cannot transfer the domain between registrars.
In most cases, once you are within this timeframe you are obligated to renew the domain with the existing registrar and wait until 60 days into the new period before contacting someone to request a domain transfer. When requesting transfer you could provide WHOIS output from www.internic.net or from the existing registrar's website. We are specifically looking for the Organizational Contact email address of record so we can "CC" that email address in all email correspondance so they know what to expect and what to do.
Here is how it works:
1. The receiving registrar initiates a domain name transfer
2. The e-mail address of recod is sent 2 confirmation screens.
3. The e-mail address of record is sent instructions and code on how to expect an email from up to two registrars and with actions they must take.
4. The losing registrar transfers domain ownership to the gaining register The gaining registrar can opt for more than one year and at which time will also change and setup DNS records. (Please read note on DNS) Always with a transfer comes an additional year or Registration (minimum).
DNS information is the responsibility of the domain holding organization. Specific DNS information especially for any MX, A or CNAME record that empowers services such as 3rd party email filtering are required. For obvious security resons these setting are generally not available to the Internet at large and need to be provided.
Who owns my domain?
Generally one does not own what one cannot purchase in perpetuity. The maximium amount of time a domain name can take is 10 years. If domain ownership issues are pertainent, keep all records of your invoice that contain line items pertainent to domain registrations or renewals. If further inclined, record your check or transaction numbers as well.
